WEEK 1 |
Introduction to Substance |
Aug 26 |
|
|
|
|
- Watch and work through: Intro to Substance Designer video series, videos 1-11
- Create (4) polished sketches of an object, character, or setting that you wish to texture. The 4 sketches should depict the the top, front, back, and side of your subject matter. Use this assignment to conceptualize your project's look and its elements. You can create the sketches via hand drawing, or though digital montage (such as with photoshop), or digital drawing (such as with Procreate/ Rebelle). Again, you may use any method you'd like to create these images: photoshop, hand drawing, illustrator, blender. Make them as detailed as possible. Four (4) 2D illustrations / orthogonal view are on Wednesday, Jan 17. Scan or photograph the images if they are hand drawn. The images should be saved in JPG, TIF, png or exr format. Pls be sure they are at least 2560 x 1080 pixels wide/ high @ 72dpi (2K texture). A 4K resolution is even better, if your cpu can swing it: 4K resolution is 4,096 x 2,160 pixels

WEEK 2 |
PBR Textures and Substance |
Sep 2 |
|
- Create an idea board in Pinterest or some other online image aggregator. Even just a google folder is fine.
- Collect at least 3-6 images that together give a good sense of a texture you’d like to create. (This should be in direct relation to the objects you sketched for today.)
- Show what the texture might look like close up vs what it looks like far away. Show what the fine, medium, and large details are. How does the light reflect off of it? Does it look different in the dark than it does in light? Does it glow?
- Share the link to your idea board(s) with me via email pls
|
Sep 4 |
|
- Add four descriptions to your idea board (@200 - 300 words ea) that give us a detailed understanding of how you hope to visualize the following elements:
- descriptions of two textures or surfaces that your camera will likely spend the most time on. pile in as may adjectives for this as possible. add additional image references if you feel they would help illustrate
- describe the background of your scene (this can be relatively short, if it's minimal).
- describe the light and atmosphere in the scene. daylight, interior, warm, cold, hazy, crisp, dusty, minimal, maximal, glowing surfaces, sears portait lighting, etc.
- Examples of Verbal Storyboarding, for inspiration (re the four descriptions)
- Email Instructor before class with your decsion on which aspect of the classes' modeling + animation pipline you will research
